​​​The MSc in Public Health is a research-informed, applied programme designed to provide students with advanced, specialist knowledge of the factors that shape population health and the skills to tackle them.

​Through a diverse range of bespoke modules, students will critically engage with global and local public health challenges, exploring how health is influenced by social, political, economic and environmental determinants. This innovative and interdisciplinary programme encourages students to question models of healthcare delivery and to develop a nuanced understanding of the cultural, social and political contexts that inform and influence health promotion, protection and healthcare services.

​A core strength of the programme lies in its interdisciplinary approach, drawing on expertise across two schools - Social Sciences and Humanities and Sports Exercise and Health Sciences - in sociology, social policy, communication and media, epidemiology and public health. Students will explore the dynamic interplay between research evidence and public health policy, developing the skills required to understand the multifactorial determinants of health and illness and shape policy agendas, implement interventions and advocate for systemic change.  

​Who should study this programme? 

​Our MSc Public Health programme is for graduates who are interested in understanding and tackling real-world health challenges. Students will be curious about how social, environmental and political factors shape health and wellbeing at the population level and motivated to use data, research and evidence to respond to public health issues, reduce health inequalities, prevent disease and promote wellbeing. This interdisciplinary degree programme cuts across boundaries between the social sciences, epidemiology and policy and is suitable for students with a wide range of backgrounds in social sciences, medicine, nursing, biomedical sciences, epidemiology and other related disciplines.

The MSc may also be of interest to those with relevant professional experience and qualifications in public health or related fields such as social care, education and housing. Students will study evidence-based strategies used to promote health and reduce inequalities, equipping them with the skills, knowledge and competencies for employment as leaders in public health professions.

The programme develops your understanding of health systems, inequalities and population wellbeing, combining methodological training with critical analysis of how public health priorities are shaped through policy, research and social science.

Compulsory modules

Students will engage with a range of social science theories, learning how to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world issues. They will gain an understanding of the wider determinants of health inequalities in national and global contexts, studying current and emerging threats to human health and well-being, the cultural context of disease, ethics, social justice and equity issues in relation to public health.

Health communication is a field that bridges science communication and health promotion. Throughout this module, students will develop a critical understanding of contemporary communication issues that impact on public health. These include mis and dis-information, communication within medical encounters, the role of health social movements, the use of storytelling and visual methods in health education strategies, and how public health issues are covered in the media, social media and within social marketing campaigns.

The aims of this module are to consolidate students' experiences of undertaking research in both the social science and humanities traditions and to equip them with the appropriate intellectual and practical methodological, writing and reflexive skills to successfully undertake an independent and original piece of critical research on an issue of relevance to their programme.

Compulsory modules

​Through this module students undertake a project of public health research on a topic of their own choosing. Students can choose one of the following formats: empirical study collecting primary data (qualitative and/or quantitative), empirical study using secondary data publicly available in official data repositories (e.g., UK Data Service), library-based studies, policy-review or theory-led (including PhD proposals).  

​With the support of an academic supervisor and a programme of dissertation workshops, produced work will show a detailed understanding of their chosen topic through the application of relevant knowledge, theories and concepts acquired throughout the course and through their own independent study. Students will demonstrate their ability to plan and conduct public health research with rigour and to communicate their ideas with clarity and precision.

​The module provides students the opportunity to work with a project partner in the private or public sector to deliver a research project related to public health. Based on a brief by the project partner, students will conduct and write an original study that solves a real-world problem or addresses a research need by the partner organisation. 

​The module equips students with academic skills needed for conducting their research project. In addition, it fosters employability skills through careers-related training, fostering professional communication, networking and other workplace-related skills.​

​​You will be assessed through a variety of coursework, including essays, reports, oral presentations, posters and other forms of creative work. The final assessment is a poster presentation and a dissertation based on an original research project carried out with one-to-one guidance from an academic or industry-based supervisor.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 67%-80%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 70%-83%.

Public health professionals are central to addressing key global societal problems, tackling everything from infectious disease outbreaks to health inequalities, policy design and wellness programmes. Graduates of this MSc will be equipped for careers in public health research, policy development, health promotion and global health initiatives across public, private and third-sector organisations.
