Our PGCE Physical Education programme prepares you to teach the 11-18 age range and is offered as a full-time, one-year programme. It provides practical professional preparation for teaching in secondary schools and is designed and delivered in partnership with schools across a number of local authorities.
This programme is taught by our School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, which has a strong tradition of teacher education and a history of successfully producing outstanding teachers who are in great demand by schools and colleges in the UK and internationally.
At the heart of the PGCE is the development of your teaching competences. The course lasts 36 weeks and two thirds of it will be spent gaining teaching experience in two different secondary schools, where you will have the support and guidance of experienced teachers. For the rest of the time, you will work at Loughborough with tutors and teachers who will prepare you for your school experience and guide you in making the important links between the theoretical and practical components of the course.
Upon successful completion of the PGCE, you will be qualified to teach children aged 11-18. The programme also offers 90 credits towards an MSc Education degree with a clear pathway to complete your master's within two years of teaching.
You can complete this programme with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education with QTS (above 50%) or a Professional Certificate in Education with QTS (above 40% but below 50%). Following the completion of the PGCE, if you are eligible, you can decide to continue on to complete a Physical Education with QTS MSc degree.

Our Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status programme is designed to produce well-qualified subject-specialist teachers for secondary schools, who engage in critical reflective practice to further develop their teaching and enhance pupil learning.
General Professional Studies
This module aims to:
- give you a systematic understanding of the wider professional requirements of teachers in secondary schools
- develop critical awareness of contemporary whole school issues informed by professional practice
- critically appraise policy and research related to the wider professional development of new teachers
- address the requirements of the Teachers' Standards (Department for Education, 2011).
Professional Studies (Physical Education) 1
The aims of this module are for you to:
- systematically develop the subject knowledge, understanding and skills required of a specialist teacher of physical education in a secondary school, including the subject content within the realms of the national curriculum
- develop critical awareness of contemporary subject-related issues informed by literature and professional practice
- critically appraise current professional development needs and strategies to meet them
- evaluate pedagogical literature and methodologies in relation to planning and delivering subject-specific lessons and assessing pupil learning
- develop strategies to meet your own current professional development needs prepare to teach the subject safely within a secondary school context
- address the requirements of the Teachers' Standards (Department for Education, 2011).
Professional Studies (Physical Education) 2
This module will see you:
- develop the comprehensive subject knowledge, understanding and skills required of a specialist teacher of physical education in a secondary school, including the subject content with the realms of the national curriculum and the requirements for related academic and vocational courses
- develop a critical awareness of contemporary subject issues and new insights informed by literature and professional practice
- evaluate pedagogical literature and methodologies in relation to effective planning and delivery of subject-specific schemes and units of work and assessment of pupil learning
- critically appraise your current and future professional development needs and determine strategies to meet them
- address the requirements of the Teachers' Standards (Department for Education, 2011).
Practical Teaching (Physical Education) 1
The aims of this module are for you to:
- be introduced to the teaching skills necessary to qualify as a specialist teacher of Physical Education in a secondary school
- develop the basic teaching competences detailed within the Teachers' Standards (Department for Education, 2011)
- plan, deliver and assess pupil learning
- apply your generic and subject-specific knowledge and understanding in a practical setting
- teach your subject safely within a secondary school context.
Practical Teaching (Physical Education) 2
This module will allow you to:
- develop the teaching skills necessary to qualify as a specialist teacher of physical education in a secondary school
- meet the teaching competences detailed within the Teachers' Standards (Department for Education, 2011).

Entry requirements for United Kingdom
A 2:1 honours degree in a relevant subject (one in which at least 50% of the content is Physical Education/Sports Science) awarded by a UK higher education provider or a recognised equivalent qualification. A 2:2 will be considered with extensive school experience.
GCSE grade 4 (C) or above Mathematics and English Language (or equivalents. Please note: In accordance with the Department for Education ITT criteria for entry for initial teacher training, qualifications in key and functional skills at level 2 are not equivalent to GCSEs.)
