LU Arts is our student-focused arts programme, giving you plenty of opportunities to enjoy and get involved in the arts during your time at Loughborough. LU Arts is open to all students regardless of whether you are undertaking an arts-based degree with us.
Our programme covers a wide range of art forms from pottery, painting and creative writing to music, dance and drama. There are events throughout the year including live performances, workshops, artist talks, discussion events, exhibitions, competitions and more. Whether you want to enjoy performances by others, develop your existing talents or learn a new skill, there is something for you.
Please note that due to COVID-19 it may not be possible for us to run some of our activities this year, however in some cases where our events cannot be run face to face, they may be offered virtually.
Whatever your musical interests there is something for you at Loughborough. We can help you keep on playing and enjoying music whilst you are studying here. If you are a keen musician at whatever level, we can organise discounted music tuition in a range of instruments and voice. Need somewhere to practice? You can access our practice rooms for FREE from 8am to 10pm daily (via our Music VIP club).
You can also play and enjoy music with like-minded students in one of many music-related societies (including LSU Classical, Tuxedo Swing, MuSoc, Your Sound, LSU Sing, LSU DJs and RockSoc); or join our University Choir, which is open to all students and staff.
If you want to keep up your acting, singing or dancing or get involved behind the scenes alongside your studies, then there are lots of performance societies you can join at Loughborough Students’ Union. Students, staff and the general public can enjoy the productions and showcase events which these societies put on each year.
In partnership with the student-run cinema Flix, we regularly host National Theatre (NT) Live screenings, bringing the very best of British theatre to the cinema screen of Cope Auditorium – and at a fraction of the price of a theatre ticket.
Creative writing and spoken word
If you’re a budding writer, poet or spoken word artist, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to pursue your interests at Loughborough. Throughout the year our events programme may include one-off poetry and creative writing workshops with professional writers. In addition to this, we offer a 10-week long creative writing evening class each semester, which offers a greater depth of tuition. This class is open to students, staff and the general public.
Our popular Speech Bubble performance poetry nights in LSU showcase the amazing spoken word talent we have on campus; sit back and enjoy the evenings or take part in our open mic slots. This event also features professional performers and is open to students, staff and the general public.
There are lots of opportunities to enjoy the visual arts at Loughborough, either by getting creative yourself or enjoying the work of others. From evening classes and hands-on taster sessions in a variety of creative skills to exhibitions and our very own contemporary art programme, there is something to suit a range of interests and abilities. For further details about our visual arts offering take a look at our website.
If you are looking for something more ‘hands-on’ then each semester we offer creative evening classes in pottery and painting and drawing. We also have our weekly Happy Mondays events in Loughborough Students’ Union, which include one-off taster sessions in a wide range of creative skills such as batik, screen printing, pottery, glass fusion and woodturning.
We also have Radar which is where we invite leading contemporary artists to develop new projects in response to academic research. For more information visit the dedicated Radar website.
