Professor Giuseppe Saccomandi

Headshot of IAS Residential Fellow Professor Giuseppe Saccomandi

IAS Residential Fellow

Università degli Studi di Perugia

Professor Saccomandi is an applied mathematician with a background in physics and engineering sciences. Since 2007, he has been a Full Professor at the University of Perugia, following previous academic positions at Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Salento. His education includes the Schola Europaea Bruxellensis in Belgium, the University of Perugia, and research collaborations with Professors Michael Hayes (Dublin), Raymond Ogden (Glasgow) and Kumbakonan Rajagopal (College Station).

His research focuses on the axiomatic theory of continuum mechanics and wave propagation, particularly in modelling the mechanical behaviour of soft materials such as gels and biological tissues. He integrates experimental data—obtained through mechanical and acoustic measurements—with rigorous mathematical modelling to improve predictive accuracy. Professor Gérard Maugin, in Continuum Mechanics through the Twentieth Century (Springer, 2013), remarked that his work “is marked by a fruitful cooperation with foreign scientists, often in the British-Irish tradition of applied mathematics.”

In addition to his role in Italy, he serves as Adjunct Professor of Applied Mathematics at NUI Galway, Director of the Gruppo Nazionale di Fisica Matematica, and board member of the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica (under the Italian Ministry of Scientific Research). He is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Engineering Science and Applications in Engineering (Elsevier) and contributing editor of the International Journal of Non-linear Mechanics (Elsevier).

His awards include the Bourse de la Ville de Paris (2006) and a Leverhulme Trust grant (2024).

During their Residential Fellowship, Professor Saccomandi will be collaborating with Dr Karima Khusnutdinova from the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
