PGR Workshop - Exercises in Postura

IAS Residential Fellow Dr Pedro Oliveira delivers a workshop for Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) - 

This postgrad workshop focuses on writing exercises based on my ongoing research on Postura as an ethics of listening and somatic mode of address. Participants will be introduced to the idea of Postura through my own as well as key adjacent texts; we will also engage in attuning exercises, finding rhythms based on and emphasizing difference. Then we will work with the three conceptual instruments outlining my research: granularity, contiguity, and polyrhythm, and will perform a series of experiments with writing, breathing, and reading in such a way that text becomes texture, words make meaning beyond meaning-making, and collective theory-finding begins requiring the body rather than being abstracted from it. The workshop culminates on a collective, polyphonic reading of these short textual impulses.

Postura was first articulated during a public workshop I gave at the Italian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale for Contemporary Art in 2024. A text was produced after this workshop and published in the Pavilion's reader (Due Qui/To Hear, Quodlibet 2024). Postura was also used by Gaia Martino and Nina Fiocco as the guiding principle for their UNIDEE/Fondazione Michelangelo Pistoletto's two-year curatorial program in 2025. Postura is also embedded in my own teaching practice at the Sound Studies and Sonic Arts MA at the UdK Berlin. Lastly, I have explored modes of Postura in my own sound practice, performing an improvised work titled "on arriving without colliding"; a conversation between myself and Holger Schulze about it is to be published by e-flux in 2027.
