Loughborough University Sports Code Of Conduct

  1. What is the purpose of the Code of Conduct?

This document serves as the Code of Conduct for individuals engaging with Loughborough Sport activities. It outlines the expected standards of behaviour to be upheld by all those participating in any in-person or online activity or event.

At the forefront of Loughborough Sport’s priorities is the welfare of its students and the safeguarding of those who engage in and lead our sports clubs. This commitment extends across various domains, including but not limited to sports fixtures, social gatherings, and transportation associated with any activity.

The Code of Conduct endeavours to ensure the highest possible standard of integrity, transparency, fair play, competition, and conduct, with the aim of safeguarding the rights and interests of all Loughborough Sport participants.

  1. Who is this aimed at?

All activity associated with Loughborough Sport. This code also applies to all participants, volunteers and supporters.

  1. Behavioural expectations

Participants are expected to adhere to the following:

  • Avoid behaviours that bring the University or any of its programmes into disrepute
  • Do not engage in any discriminatory, sexist, racist, transphobic, disablist, homophobic, or similar behaviours
  • Demonstrate respect toward opponents, staff, and officials at all times and adhere to the rules of sport inside and outside competition.
  • Abstain from violence outside the boundaries of sport regulations and from seeking unfair advantages through cheating or prohibited substances.
  • Avoid pressuring or coercing fellow participants into uncomfortable actions, initiations or harassment of any form
  • Exhibit appropriate conduct concerning language, noise levels, and general behaviour Refrain from engaging in activities that lead to antisocial behaviour or disturbances both on campus and in off campus communities or licensed establishments.
  • Take personal responsibility for understanding this Code of Conduct and the consequences of violations. Seek additional information or clarification if unsure about its application
  • Act as exemplary ambassadors for the university and sports
  1. Playing and competition

When representing Loughborough Sport in any sporting activity, each individual must:

  • Advocate for fair play
  • Adhere to the specific sport regulations
  • Display and promote high standards of behaviour
  • Respect an official's decision and avoid engaging in public criticism of game officials
  • Refrain from using offensive, insulting or abusive language or behaviour, whether expressed verbally or via social media sites
  • Display dignity in victory or defeat, thanking opponents and officials after every game.
  1. Social Activity

Loughborough University does not permit Initiation ceremonies. Please refer to the welcome social guidance for best practices and acceptable social activities (AU Welcome Social Form (office.com) This guidance must be followed at all times.

  1. Social media policy

Social media serves as a valuable platform for communication and engagement within our sports community. However, its responsible use is essential to maintain a positive and respectful environment for all participants.

  • Respectful and inclusive communication. All posts and comments should reflect respect for diverse opinions and backgrounds.
  • Privacy and confidentiality. Do not share personal information, sensitive data, or confidential communications without proper authorisation.
  • Positive representation. Be mindful of the potential impact of online presence on the reputation of the university and the sports community.
  • Use of official accounts. All social media representing university sports teams or clubs or programmes should be managed responsibly and professionally. All content should align with the values and goals of the university.
  • Avoid misinformation. Before sharing information, ensure its accuracy and reliability.
  1. Potential consequences of Breaching the Sports Code of Conduct

Any breach to this Code of Conduct may result in Loughborough Sport, Union-level or University disciplinary action. Each of these can lead to one or more sanctions, including but not limited to a training/match ban, or removal of student from the student group. More serious breaches can result in Union and/or University disciplinary action.
