PhD Topic/Title: Invasive alien carnivorous plants: ecology, function and management of the purple pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea) in Europe

Research

The introduction of an invasive non-native species has a major anthropogenic impact on ecosystems and biodiversity. The purple pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea) has been introduced to bogs across Europe with its effect on the environment being only slightly studied, in comparison to its native environment of N. America. Bogs are fragile environments where plant growth has been reported to be slow, therefore, a fast invading species may have detrimental effects on the habitat. Her PhD research project aims to determine the current and likely future extent of Sarracenia purpurea within Europe, and providence evidence to support management of existing populations.
