Academics appointed to review QAA 2022 Subject Benchmark Statements

Three Loughborough academics have been appointed to the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) advisory groups, to review the 2022 Subject Benchmark Statements.

Subject Benchmark Statements describe the nature of study and the academic standards expected of graduates in specific subject areas. They show what graduates might reasonably be expected to know, do, and understand at the end of their studies, and are used as reference points in the design, delivery, and review of academic programmes.

Subject Benchmark Statements are reviewed on a cyclical basis, and to ensure these reviews take into account a diverse and broad spectrum of intelligence, opinion and experience on the subject areas considered, each area under review has its own advisory group. This comprises of members of the academic community, employers, professional, statutory and regulatory bodies, and students.

In 2022 QAA will be reviewing 13 Subject Benchmark Statements. From Loughborough the advisory group members are:

Speaking about Loughborough’s role in reviewing the QAA Subject Benchmark Statements, the University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Teaching, Professor Rachel Thomson, said: “I am really delighted that three of our academics will be part of this important process. Their expertise and insights will play a crucial part in ensuring that the high standards of academic programmes across HE are maintained and that our curriculum remains relevant.”

Dr Ailsa Crum, QAA’s Director of Membership, Quality Enhancement and Standards said: “The commitment and dedication of our experienced advisory groups helps to ensure that Subject Benchmark Statements continue to be valued by disciplinary communities. We are grateful to all of those who have volunteered their time to support this vital activity and look forward to working closely with them in the review of Subject Benchmark Statements this year.”
