About

Welcome to English at Loughborough University

Dr Jennifer Cooke

English at Loughborough comprises a supportive scholarly community of academics, doctoral researchers, and undergraduates, who all share a passion for illuminating the significance of literature and culture. We are proud to be at 7th place in the Guardian’s best universities league table and 8th in The Times’s Good University Guide.

Our research expertise is concentrated in textual editing, the health humanities, and understandings of gender and identity. We have specialists in American literature and culture, Irish writing, film, creative writing, and in periods of literature from the Medieval and Renaissance through to the present. Our faculty and postgraduate offices, some teaching rooms, and our community ‘break out space’, where we also hold social events, are all based together in Martin Hall.

We offer undergraduate degrees in English, English Literature, English with Creative Writing, English with Digital Humanities, English and Sports Science, and English with Business Studies. Our degrees all provide a strong spine of literary knowledge from the medieval period through to the contemporary, and options to study a range of specialist modules in emergent and non-canonical areas of literary studies.

Our students learn how to construct persuasive arguments, to undertake effective group and project work, and give presentations. Our assessment is mainly coursework-based and suited to the skills needed to navigate everyday life and work. We are 1st in country in the Guardian’s league table for our alumni achieving graduate-level jobs within fifteen months of graduation. Our graduates go on to have careers in publishing, marketing, account management, education, journalism, PR, the heritage and cultural sectors, and beyond.
