The Criminology MSc is a research-informed programme designed to allow students to develop specialist, applied knowledge about crime and its control but also about how we understand and conceptualise the notion of justice. Through engaging with a range of modules, students will begin to question traditional understandings of justice and its application in contemporary society.

This new and innovative programme builds upon Loughborough’s strengths and is taught by leading research experts from a range of criminological, sociological and psychological backgrounds with real world experience of the programme content. You will study bespoke content developed to align with our internationally recognised research in fields such as sexual violence, youth justice, sports criminology, psychology and the criminal justice practice, alongside material that develops a holistic understanding of criminology.

Teaching on the programme is research led but student focused. You will benefit from our strong links to a broad range of criminal justice and professional organisations. Studying with us will provide you with practical insights into current debates in the field of criminology, alongside transferable, employability skills which are embedded within our curriculum.

Who should study this programme?

Our Criminology MSc degree is for graduates who are interested in the study of crime and justice. This includes understanding how people become involved in crime, how justice systems respond offending behaviour and the many ways that we can improve social and justice policies to address the problem of crime.

We explore how social structures, systematic bias and inequity, as well as government policies intersect in ways which exacerbate crime. We explore in detail how varied social science disciplines including criminology, sociology, psychology, applied criminal justice, law, and victimology, can be harnessed to help global societies to tackle crime, reduce criminogenic lifestyles and improve justice systems. Therefore, this course is suitable for students from a wide range of social-science backgrounds with an interest in crime and justice issues, who plan to further their research or employment prospects in these areas.

Compulsory

This module introduces criminology and criminological theory through a range of issues, case study examples and topical debates. It introduces students to the key theoretical approaches within criminology that act as a framework for understanding areas such as victimisation, mental health, criminal justice, youth justice psychology and the law, violence. The module encourages students to analyse critically a range of criminology and social issues and problems in contemporary Britain, and the arrangements that have been devised to meet them.

To develop a critical understanding of Child First justice in the broader international context of youth justice policy and practice.

The criminal justice system is constantly having to adapt and evolve to external pressures. This module will introduce students to a range of contemporary issues in criminal justice and question how effective the current system is at dealing with such challenges. Using real-life case studies, topical news stories and contemporary research, within this module you will develop an understanding of key issues and debates that shape our societies and justice systems today.

Compulsory

The aims of this module are to consolidate students' experiences of undertaking research in both the social science and humanities traditions and to equip them with the appropriate intellectual and practical methodological, writing and reflexive skills to successfully undertake an independent and original piece of critical research on an issue of relevance to their programme.

This module will enable students to examine key issues in responding to victims and perpetrators of sexual violence, including meanings of justice and strategies for prevention.

This module aims to examine crime, deviance and social change through a sporting lens. It will engage with the key theoretical approaches within the social sciences that can act as a framework for understanding more practical examples of crime, deviance and social change in sport.

This module will enable students to explore ways in which Forensic Psychologists contribute to different legal systems. The module will include an analysis of the complexities related to eyewitness testimony and identification and introduce psychological procedures and techniques used to interview witnesses and suspects. Next, it will explore the merits and limits of psychologists as expert witnesses. The module will also cover how psychology can aid police investigations, the detection of deception, and make sense of jury decisions.

Through this module students undertake a project of criminological research on a topic of their own choosing. Students can choose one of the following formats: empirical study collecting primary data (qualitative and/or quantitative), empirical study using secondary data publicly available in official data repositories (E.g. UK Data Service), library-based studies, policy-review or theory-led (incl. PhD proposals).

With the support of an academic supervisor and a programme of dissertation workshops, produced work will show a detailed understanding of their chosen topic through the application of relevant knowledge, theories and concepts acquired throughout the course and through their own independent study. You will be assessed through coursework, presentations, essays and reports. The final assessment is a presentation and a dissertation, based on an original research project carried out with one-to-one guidance from a supervisor.

The fee stated is for a full-time student undertaking a master’s programme of 180 credits. Part-time students will spread this credit load over a two or more years of study as agreed with the School/Department. Fees will be charged for the credit weighting of modules taken in a given year. The tuition fees payable can be calculated by dividing the published fee by 180 and then multiplying by the number of credits to be taken in the specific year.

Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase in subsequent years by a small amount (will not exceed 5%) to take into account inflationary pressures.

Professor in Criminology/Head of Department

Mark's main area of interest is in UK and international illicit drugs policy. He also work closely with the Ministry of Justice looking at how substance misuse recovery can be enhanced within prisons. He is also interested in the use of realist methods in research.

Dr Dom Willmott

Reader in Legal and Criminological Psychology

Dom is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Legal and Criminological Psychology and Programme Leader for the Masters in Criminology at Loughborough University. His research explores jury decision making within rape trials and the psychology of offending behaviour.

Reader in Criminology

Olivia is a court researcher and specialist in justice for rape victims. She has worked with the College of Policing, Crown Prosecution Service, Home Office and Ministry of Justice to improve responses to sexual violence.

Neema is a specialist in youth development and decision-making, with an interest in morality, empathy and rule-following/breaking. Neema is the founder and principal investigator of SATNAV Compass, an intervention programme to support children locally and internationally.

Dr Christopher Kay

Senior Lecturer in Criminology

Christopher's interests include desistance from crime, youth transitions and sports-based interventions. He works with criminal justice and sports organisations to explore challenges faced by justice-experienced people and how these can be overcome.

Stephen is a youth justice expert with 25 years of research and scholarship experience, working with children, families, professionals and governments to challenge negative understandings of youth offending and youth justice in evidence-based and 'Child First' ways that promote positive outcomes.

Masahiro’s research focuses on restorative justice, youth offending, victimology, domestic abuse and comparative criminology. He partners with youth justice and domestic abuse services to examine innovative approaches to justice and crime response.

Amy is a zemiologist, specialising in border harms and resistance to social harm. She is currently chair of Northamptonshire Rights and Equality Council whose work seeks to advance social justice, equality and human rights.

Kirsty is a critical criminologist specialising in domestic abuse. Her work examines how power shapes violence across individual, cultural and societal levels. She serves on the British Society of Criminology Victims Network committee.

Matt is currently researching the use of humour in teaching in the context of neurodiversity as a result of an Innovation In Teaching Award. He was 2023 Winner of the Vice Chancellor's Annual 'Unsung Hero' Award.
