External guest speakers
Hosting an external speaker (or speakers) at an event can be a fantastic way to bring new perspectives and expert knowledge to campus and an effective way of engaging your event audience.
The University is committed to free expression within the law for staff, students and visiting speakers. Please refer to our Freedom of Expression Code of Practice.
Our External Speaker Policy should be followed for any External Speakers invited to the University. Appendix 4 of the External Speaker Policy sets out the standards of conduct expected of External Speakers.
To enable us to support your event appropriately, event organisers looking to host an external speaker/s are required to complete our External Guest Speaker request form via the portal below.
Who should fill out the external guest speaker request portal?
- LSU Student Groups including societies, clubs and associations
- Student organisers of University events involving an external speaker
Staff organisers of events will be expected to familiarise themselves with the External Speaker policy and to escalate any concerns about speakers. Staff still are encouraged to complete the portal for record keeping and awareness.
Portal submissions are reviewed by the University’s Security Service. Unless an event or speaker is deemed likely to breach the principles of our External Speaker Policy, the event will be permitted to proceed.
In reaching a determination about whether to permit an event, the University will not normally require the event organiser to bear any costs associated with security for that event, save for exceptional circumstances as set out in the External Speaker Policy.
