Dr Santoso received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2019 for his career in banking, finance and public service across a series of senior and executive positions.

Dr Santoso is a leading figure in banking and finance and is credited with bringing the science of risk management to Indonesian banks. He is currently the Chairman of Indonesia Financial Services Authority (FSA), an independent supervisory authority for the financial services sector. He is a visiting Professor of Economics and Business at Universitas Sebelas Maret in central Java.

He has held a series of prestigious posts throughout his career. He began at the Central Bank as a bank auditor, was quickly promoted to Head of Internal Research Bureau, and later made the Chair of the Banking Transformation Programme. He has also held positions as the Head of the Financial System Stability Bureau, Director of Banking Research and Development, and Director of the Banking Regulation.

Dr Santoso’s career spanned the globe as he assumed a post as the Head of Bank Indonesia’s Representative Office in New York. Following this he took a position at the International Monetary Fund in Washington as Executive Director, a board level position representing the 600 million citizens of the Southeast Asia ASEAN countries. He was appointed President Commissioner of Bank Mandiri by the President of the Republic of Indonesia.

Dr Santoso studied Economics at the University of Sebelas Maret (UNS), Surakarta, central Java, and earned a Master of Science degree at the University of Illinois before pursuing his PhD in Economics at Loughborough University.

Alongside his impressive career in banking, Dr Santoso is a notable supporter of Loughborough Business School. He has dedicated his time to work with the School to support student research and publications. He also worked with academics to support grant bids and sponsored seminars in Indonesia and various joint projects between Loughborough University and Indonesia FSA. Wimboh has also taught at numerous universities in Indonesia and co-founded the Master of Management programme at the University of Indonesia.
