Professor Mark Bevir

IAS Residential Fellow
University of California
Mark Bevir is a Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Born and raised in London, Mark received his doctorate from the University of Oxford. Before moving to Berkeley, he worked at universities in India and the UK.
Mark is a social and political theorist. He uses philosophy and history to develop an interpretive theory of the human sciences. And he collaborates with empirical researchers to apply this theory to public policy, typically by decentring governance. His recent publications include Interpretive Social Science, with Jason Blakely (Oxford University Press, 2018), Life after God: An Encounter with Postmodernism (Brill, 2022), and A History of Political Science (Cambridge University Press, 2022).
During their IAS Residential Fellowship, Professor Bevir is collaborating with Professor Justin Waring from the School of Social Science and Humanities.
