IAS Open Programme

University of British Columbia

Viviana completed her MSc at the University of British Columbia on a scholarship from the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Her research focuses on invasive and non-invasive measures of lung function in health and disease.

She has investigated exercised-induced arterial hypoxaemia in female masters athletes with the use of a radial arterial catheter, and an oesophageal balloon catheter to calculate the work of breathing. Viviana will be sharing her expertise in the use and application of these techniques during her visit to Loughborough.  Viviana is now researching the effect of sex and age on the respiratory muscle metaboreflex and electrical activity of the diaphragm before and after inspiratory muscle training.

During their IAS Fellowship, Miss Shiffman is collaborating with Dr Sam Winter from the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences.
