For the Time Launch, artists Alison Ballard and Martin Lewis invite you to participate in a special online performance of An Hour, observing and experiencing time by counting it, minute by minute, for 60 minutes.
An Hour, a participatory art performance that explores the concept of time as duration and creates a tension between the mechanical measuring of time, as dictated by an unseen clock and how we sense time as subjective experience.
This work creates a tension between the mechanical measuring of time, as dictated by an unseen clock and how we sense time as subjective experience through an attempt to measure ourselves against clock time. This tension is compounded by the knowledge that the participators are being watched to ensure that participants comply with the instruction to sit and count time for an hour.
How better to consider time than to spend time with it? Not with your thoughts, there is no time for that, but by counting. Observing the seconds pass in your mind, wondering was that 21 seconds or 22?
Artists Ballard and Lewis invite you to participate in a special online performance of An Hour, observing and experiencing time by counting it, minute by minute, for 60 minutes.
Alison Ballard is a multi-media artist and lecturer, currently teaching at London Metropolitan University and Nottingham Trent University, UK. Martin Lewis is an artist, lecturer and PhD by practice research student at Loughborough University. His research is concerned with drawing, repetition and duration.
This event is part of the IAS Time Theme.
