Misery loves Company: Frustration in Magnetism
Naemi Leo (Loughborough)
Frustration arises in systems in which not all interactions can be satisfied simultaneously. It is a phenomenon that is ubiquitous in nature and is relevant to the physical properties of water ice, protein folding pathways, as well as to unusual magnetic phenomena. In this talk I will give a short introduction to frustration in magnetism, discussing materials such as (artificial) spin ices with correlated disorder and multiferroics with strong magnetoelectric coupling effects. I will also discuss where and how mathematical concepts from symmetry, topology and modelling approaches feature in my research on hybrid magnetic nanomaterials.
