Tales from Italia ‘90: John Brewer’s World Cup story
Cast your mind back to the Italia ‘90 World Cup. Managed by Sir Bobby Robson, the England Men’s team boasted players such as Gary Lineker, Peter Shilton, and John Barnes. What you may not know is that Loughborough alum John Brewer – a forward-thinking and passionate sports scientist – was also part of that set up. John was a pioneer, bringing sports science to professional football with thanks to the modern thinking of Robson. It’s now more than 30 years since that special moment for John, so we caught up to reminisce and find out more about his experience ahead of the next major tournament.

Upcoming book “Stressed Self to Best Self” written by Loughborough alum
Nick Propper (European Business BA, 1996) has co-authored the book “Stressed Self to Best Self: The Science Backed System for Sustainable Peak Performance” with Kevin Kachin. The book is set to release in October 2026.
