Performance analysis involves the capture, analysis and review of video and data to create actionable insights that enhance sporting performance and decision-making. Loughborough’s performance analysis team has extensive industry experience, working with teams such as Coventry City, Leicester City, Nottingham Forest, Leicester Tigers and the RFU.

Informed by this experience, the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (SSEHS) held an event on 20 May focused on career development in performance analysis, sports analytics and elite sport, providing students with the opportunity to learn from leaders in the industry, including recent Loughborough graduates.

Alumni who graduated in 2024 with a degree in Applied Sport Performance Analysis contributed to a Q&A session for students, delivered by Amy Peacham (Data Analytics Consultant at The Information Lab) and Ryan Gamble (Academy Recruitment Analyst at Chelsea FC). The day also included guest talks delivered by Jack Coles, Joel Sowton and Peter Skeels from SkillCorner and Hannah Beare (Women’s Performance Analysis Pathway Lead at The Football Association), as well as interactive roundtable sessions to facilitate networking. Students were able to hear from alumni, including analysts from FIFA, Arsenal FC, Nottingham Forest and Lancashire County Cricket Club, about how they have successfully transitioned into full-time roles in elite sport.

Ryan Gamble, an alum who now works as a recruitment analyst for Chelsea Academy, commented after the event: “I was in the same position as a lot of the students here just two years ago, so I know how helpful it is for people to come back and share their experiences. I still remember things from talks I attended years ago that have stayed with me and helped me when applying for jobs and later in my career. Being able to come back and share my experiences feels like paying them back a little bit.”

Students expressed feeling inspired after attending the event, describing increased confidence in their post-university careers:

“The best thing is getting introduced to alumni who own companies and talking to them about what their process is and gaining that knowledge that helps you along your career path. Whether it be right now, in the next six months, or five years down the line, we can use the information given by these experts to become successful in each stage of our career. You normally don't get events like this so it’s really helpful.”

Reflecting on the event, another student said: “Getting to talk to alumni about their experiences is crucial because sport is evolving so fast. I'm a data-focused person, and as a data person I must keep up with new technology, so what better way to learn it than from the people who are providing the data to us? And Loughborough makes it possible for me, so I’m very grateful.”
