Muhammad Salman Siddique

14 June 1935- 16 February 2023

My father liked to be addressed as Salman, he was a true gentleman and always spoke with great fondness about his time at the university in the early 50s.

He belonged to that era where people never complained but got on with things and didn’t think much about walking from his digs to the university in the snow, you just did if you had to.

His passion was automotive engineering, he initially worked in the UK with General Motors but went back to Pakistan and was a pioneer of the automotive industry serving his country with integrity and honesty, nationally and internationally. He headed up major initiatives in his time from setting up the first engine manufacturing plant Bela Engineering in Pakistan right through to his retirement as chief operating officer at Ghandhara Nissan. Even after retirement he continued in a consultant capacity for many years assisting where he could.

He was self effacing and principled and never took credit for teaching others although on hearing of his passing, many said he was their mentor who helped them in their careers and taught them all that they knew.

Salman came back to visit the university on 8 February 2022 and had a lovely day accompanied by his son in law which he recounted to us. Who knew it would be his last visit….
