Mathematics course overview

Our Mathematics courses provide a balanced study of the most important aspects of maths so that you can achieve a thorough understanding of the fundamentals to help prepare you for a successful career.

The MMath course is especially suitable for those interested in research careers in mathematics in universities, industry or research establishments.

Progress on the MMath course is dependent on a high level of attainment at the end of Years 1 and 2. Transfer to the MMath course from the BSc course is also possible for students performing sufficiently well.

The MMath and BSc courses in Mathematics are the same over Years 1 and 2.

Selection

Applicants are usually selected solely on the basis of their UCAS application, but in exceptional cases, an interview may be required. If applicants are made an offer of a place, they will be invited to visit the department giving them the opportunity to meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at Loughborough.

Course fees 2017/18

UK/EU fee: £9,250   |   International fee: £16,000

Placement year fees for 2020/21 are still to be confirmed. As an indication, for 2017/18 the current placement fees are set at 20% of the yearly full-time fee for UK/EU students and £3,000 for international students.

Graduate destinations

Recent graduate destinations include: Ernst & Young, Lloyds Banking Group, Associated British Foods, PricewaterhouseCoopers, British Gas, RGL Forensics, Jaguar Land Rover.

Industrial placements

All our courses are available as either full-time or sandwich courses, with the sandwich course including an extra year spent on professional training in an industrial, commercial or research establishment. The academic content of a full-time and a sandwich course is identical.

Satisfactory completion of the professional training in the sandwich course leads to the award of the Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS).

A variety of industrial, commercial and research companies have received our students in recent years and good relations have been established between these companies and the Mathematical Sciences Department.

Examples include Advantica, Ernst & Young, IBM, Aston Martin Lagonda, ICI, Hitachi and GSK. We are able to assist you to obtain suitable placements but the final responsibility rests with you.

Study abroad

If you choose one of our sandwich courses, an alternative to professional training is a year spent studying at a university in another country through a student exchange scheme, leading to the award of the Diploma in International Studies (DIntS).

We currently have exchange agreements with universities in: France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Lithuania, Australia, Canada.
