Helen Nelson

Lightning Rugby is proud to celebrate that four players; captain Rachel Malcolm, Jenny Maxwell, Helen Nelson and Rhona Lloyd have been named in the Scotland squad for its tour against South Africa.

The tour will be the first opportunity for the Scotland Women to compete on an international stage under new Head Coach Philip Doyle.

After captaining her side to a 5th place finish in the Rugby Europe Grand Prix Series and securing a place in the 2020 World Series Qualifiers, Helen Nelson is appointed tour captain. Jenny Maxwell and Rhona Lloyd also join Helen in the squad after impressing with their performances in the summer.

Nelson spoke of the tour and her selection as captain:

“We are excited to be heading out to South Africa for a two game tour. It’s the first time this squad has played South Africa, so it’s the perfect opportunity to test ourselves against a team ranked one place above us in the world standings.

“To be named tour captain is a huge honour, the girls have been working really hard and competition for spots in the squad is now higher than ever. We’re in a really good place and are now just keen to get out onto the pitch and show what we can do.”

Maxwell also spoke of her excitement for the tour:

“I am super excited to get out to South Africa and test ourselves against an opposition that is unknown to us. It’s a great group of girls that have been selected and this opportunity to spend time together with our new Head Coach will be so valuable.”

Lightning Captain Rachel Malcolm, who is also a Loughborough University alumna, is selected for the tour after a strong finish to the season for club and country. Second row, Sarah Bonar will unfortunately miss the tour as she continues to return to play from injury.

The first Test will be on Monday 30 September at 4pm (BST) followed by the second Test on Saturday 5 October at 2pm (BST). Both games will be played in Cape Town and will be live streamed.
