She has received the 2026 Susan Hardwick Excellence in Mentoring Award, which celebrates individuals who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to supporting students and colleagues, while fostering inclusive and supportive academic environments.

Professor Holloway, who has spent more than 30 years at Loughborough, was recognised for her dedication to mentoring individuals at all stages of their careers – from undergraduate and postgraduate students to early and mid-career academics. Her personalised and thoughtful approach has helped many develop confidence, navigate career transitions and build leadership skills.

The award also highlights her work supporting individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including first-generation students, international scholars, and those facing social or economic barriers.

Beyond individual mentorship, Professor Holloway has played a key role in driving positive cultural and structural change within the University. She has contributed to the development of policies around maternity leave and part-time working, and supported some of the first researchers to benefit from these changes.

Her impact is also reflected in her teaching, where she has introduced new areas of study and helped shape courses that broaden perspectives and strengthen the student experience. Her commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion has previously been recognised with her School’s inaugural EDI Champion Award.

The AAG described Professor Holloway’s career as having made a “significant and lasting contribution” to building a more supportive and inclusive academic community, with a positive impact on individuals, programmes and the wider discipline.

The Susan Hardwick Excellence in Mentoring Award is one of the AAG’s highest honours, recognising exceptional mentoring in geography and related fields.
