English alumna’s work set to feature on BBC documentary

Shruti Chauhan is a poet and performer, known for her part in poetic trio Three the Hard Way – Part 2 and for her solo performances.

Her latest venture sees her working with BAFTA award-winning director Brian Hill of Century Films on a BBC Four documentary, My Asian Family - The Musical, which airs this August.

The documentary explores the life of one Asian family, the Thakrars, who came to Leicester from Uganda in the 1970s and have since grown into a family of 90. Family members across the generations sing about the history of the family and share an insight into their lives today.

Shruti said: “This has been the most exciting, challenging and rewarding experience of my career to date. I never in my wildest dreams envisaged that my work would be on TV like this.

"I'm so grateful to all of the people who have helped me to get where I am today - the English department at Loughborough included - and am looking forward to what comes next.”

Alumna Shruti, who graduated with a degree in English in 2013, has worked as the lyricist for the documentary. Listen out for her songs throughout the programme on Wednesday 22 August 2018, 10pm, and on BBC iPlayer thereafter.
