Media and Communication BSc

Why did you choose to study at Loughborough University?

I first had an interest in Loughborough University when I found out that it was one of the best universities for Media in the UK. Then, after watching millions of YouTube videos and going through the website a few too many times, I just knew that Loughborough University was where I wanted to be. The course structure and modules were also a plus!

What is the best thing about your course?

The best thing about my course is how broad it is. There’s a lot of variety to choose what interests me and experiment with different areas. For example, I’m a Media student but I do some psychology and sociology modules, which is an absolute bliss.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

The Media and Communication lecturers are brilliant. They are really friendly and helpful, even when you send them millions of emails about a coursework. Also, the feedback I’ve received from lecturers on my work has really helped me to grow in my writing and, in general.

Tell us about a favourite project/module on your course?

Currently in my first year, so my favourite module so far is Media Landscapes, because different professionals from different areas in the media sector gave us an insight into their careers and experiences, and just gave us a glimpse of what to expect.

What kind of support have you had from your department and/or from the University?

I have received support from different areas of the university. However, my personal tutor and the careers network have been extremely helpful. My personal tutor helped me to understand how my department works and directed me to places in the university that could further help me.

The careers network is absolutely brilliant. They’ve helped me to revamp my CV and cover letter, and find experiences and opportunities to help me grow in my skills and career.

Have you completed/will you complete a placement year whilst at University?

Yes, I will be completing a placement year in my third year as part of my degree.

What do you hope to do when you graduate, and how will your Loughborough degree support this?

I’m hoping to go into the digital marketing sector and my Media and Communications degree (including a promotional culture module I’m doing next year!!!) provides me with a wealth of knowledge and transferable skills to truly excel in digital marketing and any other areas that I might be interested in.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

If you love to write, critically analyse films, music videos and text, then this course is probably for you. And if you love the practical aspects like presenting, writing articles and filming, there’s a lot to get involved in, in the Loughborough Students Union Media section. There are also exciting modules in self and identity, social psychology and language that are just a plus!

If you could give one piece of advice to someone thinking about coming to Loughborough, what would it be?

Do your research! Go for open days, watch the YouTube videos and talk to current students so you can be 100% sure this is where you want to be. And if you are, then just come and don’t second guess it!

Has Loughborough inspired you? If so, how?

Loughborough has inspired me to push myself in all areas of my life and be the best version of myself that I can be.
