Yunyi Liao holds a MSc with Distinction in Media and Communication Studies from Lund University, and a MA in Media and Journalism from Newcastle University. Before joining Loughborough University in January 2021, she worked as a research assistant participating in projects related to audience studies and popular culture.

Yunyi’s research interests include visual culture, nation branding, media audiences, everyday life, and gender. Supervised by Professor Sabina Mihelj and Dr Michael Skey, her doctoral research investigates visual culture’s role in nation branding, with a particular focus on social media platforms. She is interested in uncovering nation branding and cultural diplomacy in globalisation and digitalisation, and how is this perceived by both domestic and transnational audiences.
