Miao started her PHD in September 2019. Prior to this, she obtained a BA in Administrative Management from Hunan Agricultural University and an MA in Journalism and Communication from Hunan University.
Miao’s PHD project is concerned with China’s internal migrant workers’ identity construction on social media. Specifically, she aims to examine how migrant workers present themselves on social media, how they negotiate identity by such self-presentation, and whether the identity constructed by them can be used to resist discrimination and social inequities. Conversation Analysis and Online Ethnography are adopted to explore these research questions.
Her project is under the supervision of Prof. Sabina Mihelj and Dr. Marco Pino. It is funded jointly by Loughborough University and the Chinese Scholarship Council.
