Sales for Jordan Fitness

My degree subject hasn’t been specifically relevant to my career so far, however the skills and knowledge I got from my degree and time at university have been.

My Economics degree taught me far more than just the modules I studied, it gave me the confidence and skills to work in a professional space, to give presentations in front of an audience, to take criticism, to challenge myself and with the right team around me to succeed in whichever path I chose.

Post 16 Education: My education was in the Swedish school system which is quite different. You don’t get to pick your subjects like with A Levels but I did go to a 6th form which was specific to sport to allow me to combine my sport with my education.

Higher Education: BSc Economics

Why did you choose to study Economics?

Maths had always been my strongest subject and the one I found most interesting at school so knew I wanted a degree that was mathematically based. Economics allowed me to combine my interest in business and finance and my strength in maths while challenging myself with new subjects.

Economics is a very broad subject and Loughborough were great at allowing each of us to tailor our degrees to suit our strengths and interests.

Early on I knew the financial and statistics side of Economics were what I wanted to focus on, so I chose the numerical focused modules. Some students prefer the theory based side and there are a variety of modules for them to choose from. I even got to study modules such as Criminology and Law.

Madison’s experience as a student

As a show jumper I was away competing most weekends and sometimes missing school so I knew I wanted a university that would support me both within my education as well as commitments within my sport. After researching universities, Loughborough became my top choice and after an open day to hear about the course I fell in love with the campus and never looked back!

There was always something going on for everyone at Loughborough, for me my highlights came within the Athletic Union were I played Lacrosse and was on the Equestrian team and committee. Combining my passion for sport and economics I spent most of my final year writing a research paper on how obesity affects the UK economy, as well as performing at a high level within my sport, thanks to the support Loughborough provides.

Madison’s advice

Don’t stress about picking the right or wrong subject. Try and pick a subject you are interested in as it will make your 3 years at uni much more enjoyable!

Most future employers would rather see that you have done well in a degree you enjoy rather than struggled in another. The skills and knowledge you have received from university life will be far more important.

Loughborough University offers undergraduate degrees in the following areas:

Accounting and Financial Management, Finance and Management, Business Analytics, International Business, Management, Marketing and Management, Economics, Business Economics and Finance, Economics and Management.
