Project details
uRWELL detectors are an emerging technology with significant potential for neutron detection at neutron scattering facilities such as ISIS. Their combination of high-rate capability, good spatial resolution, and fast signal response makes them a promising candidate for next-generation neutron instruments.
The PhD student will play a key role in developing this technology, with a particular focus on enabling fast streaming readout and extending its application.
A major part of the PhD will be the development of a comprehensive simulation framework for uRWELL detectors, in collaboration with ISIS’s international partners: the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Sweden, CEA in France, the University of Thessaloniki in Greece, and the University of York in the UK. A Memorandum of Understanding for this collaborative activity is expected to be finalised in autumn 2026. The project will also develop advanced position-reconstruction algorithms to improve the spatial resolution of the detector.
The simulation framework will be based on Geant4 and Garfield++ and will model the complete detector response. This will include neutron absorption, energy deposition by the resulting charged particles, ionisation of the detector gas, the drift of ions and electrons in the applied electric fields, their multiplication, and the induction of signals on the readout electrodes. Development tasks and results will be shared among the collaboration partners and benchmarked against experimental measurements, providing a robust link between simulation and real detector performance.
The position-reconstruction part of the project will investigate machine-learning techniques to improve spatial resolution by tracking and identifying the charged particles produced following neutron absorption. A similar approach has been demonstrated at J-PARC in Japan using a related detector technology. However, the computational demands of the current reconstruction algorithm significantly limit the achievable event rate and, consequently, the performance of the detector. The PhD student will develop a machine-learning-based reconstruction method trained using both simulated and experimental data, with the ultimate aim of implementing the algorithm on FPGA hardware for real-time, high-rate processing.
Overall, this multidisciplinary project will bring together detector physics, Monte Carlo and gas-detector simulation, machine learning, experimental validation, and FPGA-based real-time computing. The goal is to develop uRWELL technology into a fast, high-resolution neutron detector suitable for demanding neutron scattering applications at ISIS and other partner facilities, while also exploring its potential for applications beyond neutron science.

Fees for the 2026-27 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2026, February 2027 and July 2027.
The studentship is for 3.5 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK rate. Due to funding restrictions, this is only available to those eligible for UK fees.
