Originally created with Ford Motor Company and Jaguar Land Rover, our Automotive Engineering MSc will provide you with the knowledge and technical expertise for a career in the fast-paced automotive sector. You'll specialise in subjects that are relevant to a rapidly changing industry and the future of ground transportation to provide you with solid expertise for your future career.

The programme will build on your existing engineering skills and enhance your understanding of the latest automotive technologies, including the development of the next generation of vehicles that feature new hardware, software, autonomy and electrification. Practical activities are integral to our course, for example, by spending time at HORIBA MIRA proving ground you'll learn how to collect and analyse vehicle handling, off-road dynamics, noise measurement, braking performance and wet weather driving data.

We have a strong and growing research programme with world-class activities and facilities. Our research topics include the development of new design methodologies for hybrid powertrains, vehicle electrification and autonomy, virtual vehicle integration and development and vehicle aerodynamics simulation and testing. In your project modules, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to these research areas.

Professional recognition

Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS). The programme also meets the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

Our Automotive Engineering MSc is designed to provide a sound education in advanced topics of relevance to the rapidly changing automotive sector, such as sustainable vehicle powertrains, vehicle electrification, autonomy and embedded intelligence, and vehicle aerodynamics.

Optional modules (select three)

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce key aspects of the systems engineering approach to vehicle engineering
  • develop these aspects within the context of vehicle straight-line performance
  • introduce the underlying principles of thermodynamics and engine power
  • to understand the construction, design, technology and performance parameters of automotive powertrains set in the wider context of the powertrain within the vehicle-customer system
  • develop supporting engineering principles and analysis tools.

The aim of the module is to develop an understanding of vehicle dynamics concepts, from the fundamentals of the bicycle model, through to development of a vehicle handling model and objective testing on a vehicle proving ground. The module also concentrates on core areas of tyres, suspension and steering, and introduces motorcycle modelling.

The aim of this module is to build an understanding of the principles and engineering methods employed in the integration of intelligent vehicle systems and to understand the techniques applied to ensure their safety and reliability. The students will develop knowledge of basic electrical systems and sensors and actuators and the appropriate methods applied to investigate risk, reliability and functional safety.

The aims of this module are to introduce key aspects of the aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics and applications in relation to automotive applications.

Optional modules (select three)

The aim of this module is to develop understanding of areas that reduce carbon emissions from automotive powertrain systems.

This module considers the latest design issues in the area of body engineering. Fundamentals are introduced of several related topics including: vehicle loading system, advanced mechanics of stress and strain analysis, failure and crash impact response, advanced Finite Element Methods, advanced techniques in nonlinear and time dependent analysis, fatigue and fracture analysis, Marc Mentat.

The aims of this module are to provide an overview of autonomous vehicle systems and to familiarise the students with autonomous vehicle control methods, sensor fusion techniques, autonomous path planning/following algorithms and example driving-assistance functions.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Introduce key aspects of the calibration of the powertrain including the relationship between legislation and technology choice.
  • Develop the context for calibration and methods for selection of the key inputs used in calibration.
  • Introduce the calibration process and how the results are used.
  • Introduce key aspects of the powertrain calibration optimisation process using global legislated emissions as a context for learning.
  • Develop an understanding of the use of Design of Experiments (DoE) and mathematical modelling as key elements in the optimisation process.
  • Formulate optimisation objectives, constraints and methods and their application to the powertrain calibration process.
  • Place the powertrain calibration methods in the context of light-duty vehicle development.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is for the student to understand how to carry out a substantial research project within a systems engineering framework and to develop computer programming skills, experimental design skills, communication skills, project time planning skills and awareness of the importance of engineering ethics to prepare the student to become a professional engineer.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom

A 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in Engineering or Physical Sciences. Required modules include Mathematics, Dynamics, Structures, Fluids, Thermodynamics.

Applicants with a 2:2 (or equivalent) may be considered with relevant experience in the automotive industry.
