Explore the complexities of financial theory and gain real-world trading experience on this unique full-time master’s, taught by Loughborough Business School’s expert academics and industry practitioners.

Many roles across finance require a deep understanding of how financial markets operate. On this degree, you will build a solid foundation in the fundamentals of the subject including core finance theory, valuation and sustainable finance. You will gain first-hand experience of trading across multiple asset classes and products using industry-standard trading software and live prices.

This MSc in Finance and Global Trading is ideal if you have an unrelated undergraduate degree and are looking to transition into a finance career with an emphasis on trading. If you do have a finance background, this programme is an excellent way to deepen your finance skills, gain a well-recognised postgraduate qualification, and develop your trading skills.

Develop your financial expertise and essential professional skills

You will spend your first semester studying with students on our other finance master's programmes, exploring core topics such as corporate finance and global markets, and learning quantitative methods in addition to either financial reporting or ESG reporting. You will also start a year-long skills-based module that will set you up with the practical tools to build your career, including communication, presentation and teamwork skills.

Derivatives and behavioural finance are the core subjects for semester two. You will also have the chance to study other finance topics such as portfolio management, financial statements analysis and valuations, and sustainable finance.

Dive into the world of trading with our experiential trading module

This programme makes practical, real-world applicable knowledge an integral part of your learning experience. As part of the programme, you will engage in an immersive Global Financial Trading module which takes place during the summer semester.

This intensive six-week work-based module runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. MSc students have the chance to develop the real-world, in-demand professional skills and disciplines employers want to see, while gaining critical financial trading knowledge and experience.

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be awarded a VTCT (Vocational Training Charitable Trust) Level 7 Diploma in Applied Financial Trading. This diploma is recognised by the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (including Associate Membership) and offers our graduates evidence of their applied learning when applying for post-university careers.

Opportunities to further enhance your skill set

During the programme, you will use the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) Workspace, a world leading provider of financial data, to complete group and individual assessments. You can also work towards the certificate of competency in LSEG Workspace, as well as other external qualifications and micro-credentials. A year-long module in professional skills (including Office 365, report writing and making presentations) will help you hit the ground running in your first graduate position.

Professional recognition

Our MSc Finance and Global Trading is part of the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Institute University Affiliation Program.

This status is granted to programmes that incorporate at least 70% of the CFA Level 1 Programme Candidate Body of Knowledge and that meet their quality requirements.

In addition, we are able to award a small number of scholarships for the CFA Program which are allocated on academic merit based on semester one assessments.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is to:

  • develop a critical understanding of modern corporate finance theory and fixed income valuations;
  • to enable students, through the application of appropriate tools and techniques, to both evaluate and solve complex fixed income and corporate finance problems.

The aim of this module is:

  • to provide students with a solid foundation in those mathematical and statistical techniques and skills used both in their other MSc modules and in the financial industry;
  • to introduce students to widely used software such as Python and Excel.

The aims of this module are:

  • Provide an overview of global financial markets and institutions, including an appreciation of the economic problems that financial institutions and markets seek to overcome.
  • Develop an understanding of the organisation and operation of the major markets and types of institution.
  • Develop familiarity with the business models of financial firms and the requirements of their clients.
  • Gain insight into the impact of technology and regulation on the evolution of the industry.

The aims of this module are:

  • to develop a critical appreciation of the professional skills essential for success in finance and accounting roles;
  • to develop both the technical and soft skills required when working in finance or accounting roles;
  • to build the skills required for tackling finance and accounting assignments when working individually or in teams;

  • to deepen and broaden students’ conceptual understanding of how financial markets ‘actually work’ and how people ‘actually make decisions’ using real-life cases and field experimental results;
  • to equip students with advanced knowledge of the latest research developments in the behavioural finance subject area;
  • to develop skills that will enable students to critically analyse financial decisions in greater depth.

  • to develop the skills which will allow the student to apply knowledge and understanding to complex issues in portfolio management;
  • to apply tools of analysis to critically evaluate portfolio management issues and performance outcome;
  • to build on the skills/knowledge from the semester one module Corporate Finance Fundamentals and selectively apply these in a portfolio context.

The aims of this module are:

  • to build on fundamental theories of corporate finance to explore more advanced corporate finance topics;
  • to develop skills which will allow the student to analyse mergers and acquisitions in depth.

The aims of this module are:

  • Deepen and broaden students' understanding of conceptual and theoretical issues in accounting and financial management through real world cases.
  • Develop an understanding of the analysis of firms' financial reports relevant to the investment decision and firms' valuations.
  • Develop an understanding of, and apply, the tools and techniques available to value the stock of listed public companies.
  • Develop and enhance transferable skills.
  • Introduce alternative investment classes.

The aims of this module are:

  • to provide students with an understanding of sustainable finance and its role in promoting sustainable development;
  • to develop students' critical thinking skills in evaluating investment decisions through the lens of sustainability;
  • to provide students with practical skills in integrating ESG factors in investment decision-making and valuation;
  • to equip students with transferable skills in research, analysis and communication of sustainability-related topics.

  • Develop comprehensive big data analytical skills for real-life problem-solving in accounting and finance.
  • Explore unstructured data and its application in accounting and finance.
  • Foster openness to new ideas and awareness of alternative solutions which should be evaluated.

  • Trade in real-time in a safe simulated environment using industry-adopted tier-1 front end trading systems.

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are listed using standard UK undergraduate degree classifications i.e. first-class honours, upper second-class honours and lower second-class honours. To learn the equivalent for your country, please choose it from the drop-down below.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom

A 2:2 honours degree with a minimum of 55% or equivalent international qualification. It is helpful, but not essential, to have studied a subject with a quantitative element such as business, accounting, economics, mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry, geography, computer science or data analytics. We will consider applicants who have taken subjects that do not have a quantitative element but ask them to do some pre-course reading before the start of the programme. No prior finance study is required. Applicants with relevant professional experience or professional qualifications would be welcomed.
