Student Ambassador

School/Department summary

Student Ambassadors are employed by the School and College Liaison Team (SCL) in the first instance but work to support many departments across the University.

Job Description

Job Grade: Grade 2         

Hours are flexible week to week and will suit most timetables. Ambassadors will ‘opt in’ to be selected for shifts.
The minimum expectation for work is 2 shifts every 6 months, with most ambassadors greatly exceeding this.

The majority of shifts will take place at Loughborough University campus. Any external events will be notifed in the shift adverts.

International students who attend the University on a Tier 4 Visa will be permitted to limit their working to 20 hours per week.

Job Purpose

To represent Loughborough University to external stakeholders by supporting events and initiatives led by the Marketing and Advancement department, primarily with the School and College Liaison, Events and Marketing teams.

These activities support student recruitment, including outreach to schools and colleges and promotion of the Loughborough student experience. You will act as a positive role model for prospective students in their educational journey.

The role offers current Loughborough students the opportunity to undertake paid work whilst developing employability skills and engaging with prospective students and young people.

Job Duties       

The Student Ambassador role is varied and offers the opportunity to enhance your personal development and gain a range of skills.

Main activities and duties

As a Student Ambassador you will represent, promote, and enhance the reputation of Loughborough University to prospective students and their influencers through a range of initiatives and events both on and off campus.

The principal duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Represent the university in a positive, professional manner, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  2. Support university events as a proactive team member, including tasks such as event setup, welcoming visitors, leading campus tours, answering questions, giving directions, and assisting with registration.
  3. Share your educational experiences to act as a positive role model, including delivering presentations, taking part in Q&A sessions, and the opportunity to create digital content (e.g. TikToks, blogs, vlogs) about student life.
  4. Participate in activities as directed, contributing to discussions with students, parents, and teachers, and working effectively with other ambassadors to deliver high-quality sessions, mainly face-to-face with occasional online or phone delivery.
  5. Follow relevant university policies and procedures, including safeguarding, data protection, consumer rights, and manual handling.
  6. Undertake additional duties as required, including work for other university departments where appropriate.

 Recruitment process: Recruitment to become a student ambassador consists of 2 stages.

 Stage 1: Written application

 Stage 2: Student Ambassador Assessment Centre

Successful candidates at Stage 1 will be invited to attend a Stage 2 assessment centre, involving a series of activities and exercises to evaluate key skills, experience, and suitability for the role.

The assessment centres will be 2 hours in length and take place on the following dates for 2026:

Tuesday 3rd November 2026
Wednesday 4th November 2026

Please note that attendance at an assessment centre is mandatory to be considered for the role.

Note: Successful applicants are required to attend post-selection compulsory training to become a Student Ambassador.

Special Conditions      

Student Ambassadors are required to sign a code of conduct which covers reliability, working with and safeguarding young people, professional standards, and consumer rights.

Transport to events external to Loughborough University will be provided, unless stated.

Organisational Responsibility

Reports to the Student Recruitment Projects Manager overall.

You will report to the Event Lead for each event and take your briefing and instruction from them.

Training Commitment to attend the compulsory training courses (approx. 2 hours duration). It should be noted that participation in the initial training is considered part of the selection process and ambassadors are not eligible to undertake any work as part of the scheme unless they complete this training.

Conditions of Service

Please note that the availability of work will vary week to week, and is not guaranteed, but Student Ambassadors usually value the flexibility this offers. Students are discouraged from working more than 16 hours per week, during term time.

Payment

Student Ambassadors are casual workers, paid £15.07 per hour of work completed (including holiday renumeration). Payment is made once a month (on the last working day of each month) through the University’s Finance Office. 

Please note we may decide not to proceed with your application, or a job offer, if we receive confirmation from University Security or Loughborough Student Union that they have taken formal disciplinary action with you during your time as a student at Loughborough. This information will be shared only for the purpose of student ambassador recruitment and will be deleted by the recruiting manager once the campaign is completed.
