Choosing Loughborough and living in halls

Loughborough University was ranked as one of the best universities for graphic design, which was a clear motivation for me to apply. I also attended an open day and found it to be such an insightful experience. The lecturers seemed incredibly passionate when talking about the course, and their approachability made me realise that the environment, sense of community, and opportunities available would make it an amazing place to study.

Accommodation was also a factor in my decision. When I visited other universities during open days, I realised that the accommodation halls were often quite far from the lecture buildings. When I visited Loughborough, I saw that there were many accommodation options available both on and off campus, which makes it really convenient depending on the course you study.

Feeling at home and finding your people

100% living on campus has helped me make friends more easily. I met some of my closest friends in halls and I feel really grateful to have had the opportunity to meet such amazing people. Going to hall socials is something I’ll never regret because that’s how I met my best friends.

I do feel at home living on campus. I made sure to bring things like plants and decorations that I would usually have at home, which helped make my room feel more personal. My university friends, the support I’ve received, and the communities I’ve been involved with have all shaped my experience at Loughborough and made me feel at home!

Support when you need it

Having the security of knowing that if I need anything, I can rely on the wardens as well as campus security has been really important to me. It’s also very convenient because I don’t need to worry about paying bills each month or dealing with deposits.

I remember that on my first day at university I had a problem with my toilet, and maintenance came almost immediately after I told reception about it. The reception staff and wardens are incredibly friendly and you truly feel supported by them.

Advice for new students

It’s completely normal to feel nervous, but remember that everyone is in the same boat. Go and talk to people - they don’t bite, I promise! Step outside your comfort zone, be brave, and be yourself.

Whenever you feel lost, insecure, or unsure about things, talk to your wardens, reception, security, SWAI, personal tutors, or other support services. There’s plenty of support available at university whenever you need it, so feel confident that you’ll never be alone!

I chose to live in Bill Mo because it was one of the closest accommodation options to the Edward Barnsley Building (Design and Creative Arts). I would recommend thinking about where you’re most likely to spend your time and choosing somewhere that works for your routine. It makes life so much easier, especially for those 9am lectures.

Overall, the best thing about living in halls is the people you meet and the fun memories you experience!
