Textiles

Understanding and progressing textile design research and practice through both practice-led and theoretical approaches.

We are committed to understanding and progressing textile design research and practice through both practice-led and theoretical approaches, particularly within collaborative and interdisciplinary working contexts.

Our expertise covers a diverse range of interests related to both textiles processes and applications, including design process development; traditional textiles and craft practices; technical and high performance textiles; sustainability and ethical practices; textiles and well-being; textiles and health; textiles arts.

Our common focus develops from fundamental understanding and core knowledge of design and art approaches, materials and specialist processes, as well as methodologies related to textiles applications. Our work informs and impacts on many textiles related fields in areas such as: sustainable and ethical design strategies, innovative production processes, users studies including wearability, issues related to well-being, art and design pedagogy.

Key projects

The Textiles Design Research Group meets regularly to provide a cross-disciplinary forum from which to develop collaborative research projects and to support the development of individual research agenda. We are also the initiator of Textile Intersections Conference, a platform for the promotion of interdisciplinary textiles research. We welcome new collaborations with industry and academia.
