In the documentary ‘War on Plastic’, the problems with recycling in the UK are exposed. Not only is our waste being exported to third-world countries, but we are not certain that it will be safely processed. Potentially being incinerated in the open air, harmfully effecting the local community, or travelling into our oceans. From this information, I wanted to encourage awareness that although recycling may elevate the guilt of not sending our waste to landfill, it is not a solution without flaws. We must focus on reducing, reusing plastic and demand for the expansion of recycling centres so that the UK can process all its waste. Through my sculptures, I conceptionally explored the contrast in our understanding of recycling and the imperfect reality. I applied the minimalistic appearance of Maren Kloppmann’s wall installations, with elements of Peter Buggenhout’s sculptures to recyclable containers. Utilising a simplistic monochromatic colour palette with the juxtaposition of the surface qualities.
