Curator comment by ISHIDA Risa about “The ground=the sky” by Sa-ya.

Ground, puddle, sky.
The beautiful scenery is reflected in the puddle.
It makes an impression and makes us imagine all kinds of things.
The artist said, “The sky is similar to humans”.
For her, the sky is the best way to express human emotions.
The weather changes, according to the time and environment.
Just as human emotions change.
For example, there are a lot of different kinds of “happiness”, “anger”, and “sadness”.
She expresses her own style by comparing the sky with human emotions.

What kind of emotions do you feel when viewing this artwork?
Clear sky, white clouds, rainbow colored light, and shadows of buildings.
We can see the sunlight first.
It so bright, and so beautiful.
This artwork is very clear.
It's as fantastic as a painting, but it is a photographic artwork.

Inversion.
The meaning of this word is to reverse and contradiction etc.
While there is a positivity shown by the light, the puddle conveys a sad feeling to us.
The big puddle must have been created after the heavy rain.
The sky after rain reflected in the puddle is very beautiful.

Also, the scenery reflected in the other side of the puddle seems like a different world.
Surely this sky expresses the emotion of a human being who has washed away sorrow and
found bright hope.

Curator comment by ISHIDA Risa about “Layered Reflections” by Hannah BENNISON.

Deep blue, a blue sky, and shadows reminiscent of landscape are reflected in a mirror.
What are these landscapes and drops of water reflected in a mirror?
The artist said “I imagined reflections and reversals from the word Inversion. From there, I
developed a work in which photographs overlap reflections on a mirror.”
Mirrors and many photographs are used in this work.
To reflect her intentions, she pieced together photographs of water droplets, splashes,
mirrors, and the sky, which she reflected in the mirror.
She broke the mirror.
After studying numerous photographic combinations and angles of view, she finally arrived
at this work.
There are two main reasons why she chose this one from many photographs.
First, the symmetry created by the reflection of the photograph and the mirror in the centre
of the photograph. Next, balance of colour in the work.
She explained to me that the balance of symmetry in the work and the balance of blue
gradients ranging from light to dark and warm colors as accents were decisive factors in
choosing this piece.

Inversion.
The meaning of this word is reversal and contradiction etc.
This photographic work consists of water droplets that reflect ambient light, photographs of
water, and reflective mirrors.
Photographic works of photographs became forms of repeated reflections, creating piling,
stacking, and layering as in the title.
Layering Reflections. That is her expression of inversion.
