Southeast University

Professor Yiming Zhang is a Yong Chair Professor at the School of Civil Engineering, Southeast University. His research lies at the intersection of data science and engineering, with a particular focus on probabilistic machine learning for predictive modelling, analysis, and optimization; structural health monitoring of civil infrastructure; Bayesian inference for uncertainty quantification; and digital twin-enabled intelligent maintenance.

Before joining Southeast University, Professor Zhang was a Maria Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the University of Cambridge, where he also served as Undergraduate Supervisor at Jesus College and Postdoctoral Research Associate at St Edmund’s College. He holds dual PhDs in Civil Engineering from Monash University and Southeast University. He later worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, supported by the Postdoc Matching Scheme.

Professor Zhang has authored over 40 papers in leading interdisciplinary journals spanning data science and structural monitoring, including 4 ESI Highly Cited Papers and 5 Most Cited Papers. He has received over ten prestigious honours, such as the Excellent Young Scientist Award, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship, Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award, and the Top Ten Scientific and Technological Advances in Industry Fields in Jiangsu Province.

He has led five major research projects as principal investigator, funded by the European Union, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and various industry partners. He currently serves as an editor for Frontiers in Built Environment, Smart Construction, and Advances in Wind Engineering, and is an active reviewer for more than 20 high-impact international journals.

During their IAS Fellowship, Professor Zhang will be collaborating with Dr Georgios Hadjidemetriou from the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering.
