Gemma is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at Monash University, Melbourne. Her main body of work draws on feminist and postcolonial thought as well as cultural geography to explore how families experience and tackle disasters during their everyday lives. This body of her research aims to develop a more human-centred scholarship on disasters. She is also passionate about working with disaster affected families and artists to produce and theorise creative research outputs.

This work has predominantly been with comics that have impacted national curriculums globally. To learn more, see her personal webpage.

Gemma completed her PhD in Development Studies at The University of Manchester, followed by a Lectureship then Senior Lectureship at Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute at The University of Manchester. She also held a Vice Chancellor’s Fellowship at RMIT University, Melbourne.

During their IAS Fellowship, Dr Sou will be collaborating with Professor Ksenia Chmutina from the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering.
