Dr Vickie Shim

Headshot of IAS Visiting Fellow Dr Vickie Shim

IAS Open Programme

University of Auckland

Dr. Vickie Shim is a Senior Research Fellow in Bioengineering at the University of Auckland. She received her PhD in 2007 for her work on finite element analysis of total hip replacement using clinical CT scans. Her subsequent research has been internationally recognized, including receiving the IFMBE Young Investigator Award and leading computational modelling efforts in a major Australia–New Zealand collaboration on tendinopathy.

Over the past decade, her work has expanded to focus on neuroscience and neuropathology, particularly the integration of advanced multimodal MRI with machine learning. She leads a research team that has developed AI-based pipelines to extract dynamic signatures from MR images, with applications across a range of neurological and musculoskeletal disorders, including mild traumatic brain injury, brain tumour, tendinopathy, and diabetic complications.

Dr. Shim has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 150 conference proceedings and has supervised 10 postgraduate theses to completion, with ongoing supervision of 17 students. She serves as associate editor for Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering and the International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Technology. She is also active in outreach initiatives aimed at increasing STEM participation among women and students from rural communities.

During their IAS Fellowship, Dr Shim will be collaborating with Dr Yang Liu from the School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering.
