Dr Sara Shaker

Dr. Sara Shaker is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Prince Edward Island’s Cairo branch, specializing in political science, gender politics, sociology & social anthropology and Middle Eastern studies. Her interdisciplinary scholarship draws from political science, sociology, anthropology, art, and politics, examining how marginalized voices articulate resistance through non-traditional media, particularly comics.
She holds a PhD in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Central European University, Austria (CEU), alongside a PhD in Political Science from Cairo University. She also earned an MA in Gender and Women’s Studies in the Middle East and North Africa from the American University in Cairo, and a BSc in Political Science from the British University in Egypt, in partnership with Loughborough University.
Her academic trajectory is marked by international experience and pedagogical engagement, including positions as a Global Teaching Fellow at Arizona State University’s Melikian Center and as a teaching assistant at Central European University. She previously served as an Assistant Lecturer at both the British University in Egypt and New Giza University and worked with the Binational Fulbright Commission in Egypt.
Her publications span peer-reviewed journals and cultural critiques, including reviews and essays in the Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication and Kohl Journal for Body and Gender Research. She has also authored Khul in Egypt, a book exploring women's divorce proceedings.
Her work has been presented at international conferences in Beirut, London, Budapest, and Cairo, and has been supported by multiple research grants and academic awards, including the Graduate Honour Award from AUC and the field and archival grant from CEU. In 2024, she was selected to attend the prestigious Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research (IQMR) at Syracuse University.
