IAS Spotlight: Women in Sport

Dr Rizzone is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedics and Performance at the University of Rochester. She is the head physician of the State University of New York at Brockport and a team physician for the University of Rochester, responsible for almost 2000 athletes. She is also a team physician for US Rowing.

Dr. Rizzone’s overarching interest is to decrease barriers to participation in exercise and sport for girls and women. Free sports bra fittings are available in the UR Fitness Science lab for anyone in the community.

Current research focuses include:

  • Appropriate bra fit and breast support
    • Bra size and fit in lactating women, post-mastectomy women, and girls in Title I schools
    • Development of a standardized bra component measurement system
    • Investigating sister sizing and cross brand sizing discrepancies
    • Concordance between self-reported bra size and objectively measured bra size

  • Fabric fatigue and stretch
    • Development of a fatigue/strain protocol of bra components as the first steps in creation of recommendations for sports bra replacement timing
    • Examination of the impact of donning/doffing and washing of bras on fabric fatigue

  • Sports bra characteristics preferences
    • Sports bra preferences in study cohorts in Great Britain, Ireland and Japan
    • Qualitative studies in different communities of girls and women: transgender, large-chested girls and women, post-mastectomy women

  • How breast size impacts injury risk
    • Investigating if breast size impacts ACL injury risk

During their IAS Fellowship, Professor Rizzone will be collaborating with Dr Rebecca Grant from the School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering.
