Sentric Music

Protecting and enhancing songwriters’ income

The way we consume music is evolving – and the industry is thriving (RIAA, 2018).

As we increasingly access and listen to music online, accounting for artists’ rights and royalty payments is becoming ever more complex.

Award-winning music publishing company Sentric Music represents the copyrights of more than 150,000 songwriters spanning the past 60 years – a portfolio exceeding one million works.

Our 18-month Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with the company has explored the collection and analysis of data from a range of sources in a bid to protect and enhance songwriters’ earnings.

Benefits for the company

To date, the KTP has delivered a royalty calculator tool that allows the accurate valuation of earnings from a variety of sources, allowing Sentric to provide better income estimates to potential clients. This is helping the company to attract and secure new business.

Benefits for the University

The KTP has also provided a unique data set that links songwriters’ royalty payments with social media indicators, facilitating the analysis of changing payment profiles and highlighting the importance of audience engagement through social media. The findings of this element of the work form the basis of a study due to be published by the University soon.
