Our Coaching, Mentoring and Buddying (CMB) framework helps to ensure that all colleagues – regardless of job family or grade – can, if they want to, apply to have access to a coach, mentor or buddy. Use these resources to help you to identify which form of support is most relevant to you. This may change over time, too, as your time at Loughborough progresses.
What is coaching, mentoring and buddying?
A coach uses their ability to listen and to ask open questions to create a relationship of rapport and trust that enables the individual to clarify what their professional and or related personal goals are and to work out what to do to achieve them.
The University has a pool of trained internal coaches who adhere to the Association of Coaching’s, Code of Ethics and undertake regular continued professional development and supervision Global Code of Ethics - Association for Coaching. They offer a maximum of four, one hour coaching sessions over a six month period.
It is recognised that some individuals, within senior roles at the University, may wish to work with an external coach due to the complexity of their situation or the level of confidentiality required.
Who would benefit from Coaching?
You may benefit from a coach if you would like:
- Short-term support in achieving specific goals
- To gain clarity around your professional or related personal goals
- Support to develop specific skills
- Support to identify possible shorter-term next steps in relation to your identified goals
Mentoring is a professional relationship in which a more experienced colleague (not necessarily a senior colleague) applies their knowledge and experience to support the development of a less experienced colleague in achieving their agreed developmental goals over a longer term (typically over twelve months).
Who would benefit from Mentoring?
You may benefit from a mentor if you would like:
- Longer term career development support in achieving ‘big picture’ goals
- To gain career development support through experience, information and advice
- To build relationships through which professional and personal skills may be shared
- To explore and develop your potential, including identification of your strengths and weaknesses
- To build a relationship in a changing environment that can enable you to negotiate challenges and to identify and pursue new opportunities
- To advocate for and progress equal opportunity at Loughborough
A sponsorship-mentoring scheme for academic staff developed by SSEHS as part of their Silver Athena SWAN work, is also open to staff in Schools (RTE, teaching, postdoctoral researchers, technical tutors and technicians).

Buddying is a knowledge-sharing method in which a peer, usually of a similar role or level of responsibility, is assigned as a first point of contact for a short period of time to provide advice and support and ensure a smooth transition into a new role.
Who would benefit from Buddying?
You may benefit from a buddy if:
- You are a new starter at the University
- You have recently changed role or taken on an additional role within the University
- You are a placement student
