Title: Nanoscale magnetism in human biology and biomedicine

Abstract: In this talk I will describe some of the work my group has been conducting that uses both new and established physical science approaches to tackle challenges in the Life Sciences. I will give an overview of how we have developed new analytical approaches to understand functional effects in nanoscale magnetic particles, and how these could be exploited for a host of applications ranging from cancer therapies to the wireless manipulation of live cells. I will also discuss our use of synchrotron x-ray techniques to probe both the chemical and magnetic characteristics of nanoscale particles found in the human brain, and how this has led to some unexpected discoveries.
