Placement year

All students have the option to take an employability-enhancing "sandwich" year of industrial training between the second and third years of academic study, and is available on all our BSc and MMath programmes.

Undertaking a placement year is a fantastic way to gain invaluable experience in a real workplace, developing your employability skills and building a professional network.

There are many benefits to a placement year and most students earn a salary during their placement and some secure permanent employment for when they graduate. Additional benefits of placements and internships may include: better workplace skills and career confidence; improved subject awareness and understanding; many students see an improvement in their grades after completing a placement; a stronger CV and enhanced graduate possibilities.

Research shows that work experience can give you an edge in the increasingly competitive graduate jobs' market, and a year spent on professional placement in industry can really help you stand out. The placement year is a valuable complement to the academic part of the programme and enables you to "test drive" a career, earn a wage, develop your interpersonal skills and boost your employability. In some cases, sandwich year placements have led to offers of permanent employment upon graduation and even to financial sponsorship for your final year at Loughborough.

We have built strong relationships with major blue chip companies who recognise the contribution our high-calibre students can make to their businesses. Students are responsible for arranging their own industrial placements, but we can help you find opportunities, and the University's Careers and Employability Centre is also there to provide support.
