I want to report a stolen or missing device

If your work device (laptop, telephone, tablet etc) is either lost or stolen, then it is very important that you report it to the University as soon as you become aware that it is missing.

How to report a lost device?

Please complete the 'Report a lost or missing device' form and send it to it.services@lboro.ac.uk and insurance.support@lboro.ac.uk as soon as you become aware that your device is missing.

Why is it important that I report the missing device as soon as possible?

It is very important that the University can determine what data/information might have been placed at risk because of the device going missing.

If the University is concerned that the missing device may result in a data breach, then it MUST notify the Information Commissioner’s Office within 72 hours of becoming aware of the incident to remain compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

In the event of data/information being placed at risk, the University may need to put in place measures to protect it. This is more likely to be successful if we can take these actions quickly.

If the device was stolen as a result of a break-in on campus, then the University will need to notify the police.

What happens after the device is reported missing?

The Information Security Team will work with the Data Coordinator in your School/Service to establish the further detail of the incident.

If data/information containing the personal information of other individuals, then we may need to inform these people of the possible breach. This information may also need to be passed to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

If the Information Security Team identify any measures that could be put in place to prevent something similar happening again or would have better protected the data/information held on the device, then it will take steps to put these in place.
