Alumni connection with SIS Pitches creates excellent partnership for Loughborough Sport

SIS Pitches is a global pitch provider, specialising in natural, synthetic and hybrid sports surfaces for some of the biggest names in sport, including Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and the Green Bay Packers NFL franchise.

Alumnus Joe Shaw is a Sales Manager for the organisation and works closely with the University to help supply Loughborough with the highest-level sports facilities.

Joe, who graduated with a degree in Sports Science with Management in 2010, has been working with the University for several years.

The organisation works on huge projects including Premier League and worldwide hockey and rugby pitches.

Recent installations on campus include the water-based hockey pitch, 3G American football and Holywell 4 football pitches, and the stadium hybrid pitch - equivalent to the elite level stadium pitches in world sport, used in FIFA and UEFA competitions and in the Premier League.

He said:

“I’ve been working for SIS for around seven years, and I enjoy visiting potential sites to enhance the delivery of sports provision. I have loved developing the partnership with the University and coming onto campus to support the offering for students.

“I was born and raised in Loughborough and to have the opportunity to continue my connection with the University through my role – and particularly through sport – is a real treat.”

In a first-of-its-kind project, last year SIS worked with Loughborough on a fully sustainable pitch.

The multi-use games area on campus was refurbished with all construction and production activities closely monitored for carbon emissions. SIS used synthetic turf, recycled foam, and organic infill made from a species of pine that is harvested and replanted in continuous cycles.

A great start in the space, SIS is passionate about working to continually develop the use of synthetic sports fields. Joe added:

“As a B-Corp certified company, seeing the sustainable multi-games space refurbished and completed with Net Zero carbon emissions was a brilliant feat. We’re committed to investing in new technologies to change the way that sports surfaces are constructed, installed and maintained in order to become more sustainable and achieve our target of being Net Zero by 2026.”

Sustainability is also an important part of the University’s strategy, Creating Better Futures. Together. Working with Joe and SIS on sustainable refurbishments is just one practical way to be making positive steps in this area.

Joe continues to work closely with Loughborough Sport to add quality and innovation to the pitches and sports fields on offer at the University:

“This partnership represents a unique opportunity for us to work together with Loughborough University’s elite staff and athletes to maximise our product quality, delivery, service and to conduct key research into athlete performance and interaction with natural, hybrid and synthetic surfaces in a variety of sports.”
