Professor Bryan Woodward

1943 - 2023

We are sad to inform you of the passing of Professor Bryan Woodward, BSc, MSc, PhD (University of London), DSc (Loughborough) DIC, Eurlng, CEng, FIEE, FIOA, FRGS, MIBEE, a long-time colleague at Loughborough who had a long and distinguished career.

Bryan started out his research with the Royal Australian Research Laboratory in 1967 and joined Loughborough as a lecturer in 1975, progressing to Professor of Underwater Acoustics and Head of Department for Electronics and Electrical Engineering during his tenure with us.

He was known worldwide for his work in underwater acoustics, retiring to Emeritus in 2008. He was a life member of University Court and a member of Council and Senate.

In addition to his work in underwater acoustics, he was also a pioneer in mobile healthcare (telecare) and he coordinated a major m-Health project funded by the British Council's UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI), with the aim of using mobile communications to improve the monitoring of heart disease and diabetes, which are prevalent in both developed and developing countries.

He published widely in his spheres of research and was deeply engaged in his profession, acting as external examiner to programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level in many UK and international universities of note and was Chief Examiner of the Engineering Council.
