Matthew's father Nick, also a Loughborough graduate, has shared an insight into a book written by Matthew. Here's are Nick's words.

It is fair to say that Matthew had a pretty tough life. Diagnosed with cancer when four years old he underwent surgery and endured hours of chemo and radiotherapy before being declared free from the disease.

Matthew then had a normal childhood and some happy teenage years before in 2013 he received the devastating news that the cancer had returned. For the next twelve years Matthew endured cycles of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, interspersed with periods of relatively good health.

During this time he remained incredibly positive achieving a first class honours degree in Economics from Loughborough whilst being an active member of both Softball and Baseball teams. He then continued his education to become a fully qualified accountant.

Matthew was also a well known member of the local sporting community making major contributions in cricket and table tennis.

As his family and numerous friends will attest Matthew was a remarkable young man.

Just prior to Matthew’s death, he surprised everyone by informing us that he had written a novel, during down times during episodes of chemotherapy, of which he was very proud.

‘A Transfer of Consciousness’ came as a surprise to all of us and sadly Matthew never got to see it in print - something that his brother Jamie and friend Neal ensured happened in his memory. They managed to get the book published via Amazon and finally unveiled it during a memorial cricket match for Matthew in June 2026.

In true Matthew fashion, he was keen that others should benefit and asked that any profits from the sale of the book should go to The Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity close to his heart.

A Transfer of Consciousness

Matthew's book 'A Transfer of Consciousness' is a thriller that blends science fiction with political intrigue. It explores what it truly means to be human and how far the powerful will go to stay that way.

The book follows Danny Whiteman who when diagnosed with cancer, thinks life can’t get any worse. He’s wrong.

Hunted, homeless, and living in a body that isn’t his own, Danny must navigate a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of government, before it silences him for good.

You can find Matthew's book on Amazon.
