Ian Stopps CBE

7 October 1946 – 14 October 2019

Born in Kent, Ian earned a first-class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University of Technology and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University in July 2014 for his contributions to UK Aerospace, Defence and Security sectors.

He kindly volunteered his time to the institution as the Chair of the School of Business and Economics’ Advisory Board. Ian was a big supporter of Loughborough and he donated over £8,000 in his lifetime to the University and it’s causes, whilst also pledging to leave a legacy gift to help make a difference to the lives of students for generations to come.

During his career, Ian worked as Chairman for Raytheon UK and he was also the founder of McLean group where he spent time as Chairman and Senior Board Advisor.

He also served on many other boards in his lifetime, including The British American Business Council, The Royal United Services Institute, the Centre for Blast Injury Studies at Imperial College London, The Council of the Society of British Aerospace Companies, and the UK Council for Electronic Business.

Recognised at national level, Ian was appointed a CBE for services to the UK Aerospace and Defence industry in 2003 in the Queen’s Honours list and he was named a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2005.

Our thoughts and condolences go to Ian’s family and friends.
