Doug Scott CBE

29 May 1941 – 7 December 2020

Doug has passed away aged 79 at his home in the Lake District.

The well-known Mountaineer studied geography and PE graduating in 1961 and gained Honorary degrees in 1993 and 2017.

Doug was part of the first team who climbed Mt. Everest in 1975, via the South-West face, regarded as one of mountaineering’s toughest challenges, due to its length and exposure to high-level winds, this achievement marked the pinnacle of big Himalayan climbs.

In 1977, he climbed The Ogre or Baintha Brakk, one of the most difficult mountains in Pakistan. On the way down, he fell just under the summit and broke both ankles, continuing on his hands and knees back to base camp, this incredible feat is amongst one of the greatest mountaineering survival stories.

He was made a CBE in 1994 and was awarded Mountaineering's single most prestigious international award, the Piolet d'Or for his visionary style and accomplishments in 2011.

He founded Community Action Nepal (CAN) in 1995, a charity that supports the mountain people of Nepal. CAN's work sustains over 40 community projects in Nepal.

Doug was inducted into the Loughborough Sport Hall of Fame in 2012.
